In this article, I explain why your website needs an SSL Certificate not only to protect your customers but to prevent ranking issues in search results.

Let’s take a moment to put ourselves in a hacker’s mind.

The targets a local car dealership, orthotics care provider, an e-commerce store. Each of these targets offers some sort of value from personal identification like an address, date of birth, or banking info.

The low-risk, high-reward of targeting SSL/TLS vulnerability makes it a no brainer not to advantage of.

The hacker would use malware to exploit their systems and steal digital keys and certificates along with instantly putting their customers at risk.

Now we have a PR crisis

Who helping fixes this

For several years now, organizations like Google & Bing have been working toward making the internet a safer place by encouraging website owners to use the HTTPS protocol. That’s awesome, right? But let’s dig a little deeper.

What is HTTPS

Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) is the secure version of HTTP, the protocol over which data is sent between your browser and the website that you are connected to

What Is An SSL Certificate

SSL certificates allow you to encrypt and secure the communication between your website and a visitor’s to your site.

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer, which is where the encryption comes from. These are small data files that bind a cryptographic key to a company’s credentials.

They bind together domain names and server names as well as an organization’s information (such as their name) and location.

These certificates are usually installed on web pages that request sensitive information from users, such as payment details or a password.

Cost

There’s paid and free SSL some even offer loss prevention in case of a cyber attack. Each has its pros and cons.

The Conclusion

If your website requests sensitive information from users, such as payment details or a password. You’ll need an SSL. Not trying to be penalized by some of the largest search engines and lose organic search rankings you’ll need an SSL.
